I recently came upon this "translation" of the DA submission terms in someone else's gallery, and am absolutely outraged by some of the clauses that stipulate what DA can and cannot do with my art.
Please read it. You'll be doing yourself a HUGE favour.
My art isn't exactly top notch, and the likelyhood of DA actually using any of my art is quite low. Nevertheless, I find that it is a matter of principle to support the right of the artist --whether average or exceedingly talented--to have his or her work seen and represented without the danger of being manipulated, changed or used corporately without paying the artist.
I'd just like to send out a huge thank you to all the amazing artists I've watched, and an even bigger thank you to those who have watched me. I've appreciated all of your wonder criticism and praise, both of which have helped me become a better artist. I have enjoyed
looking through your beautiful galleries of art, animation and photography. Most importantly, I have enjoyed getting to know the people behind the art, who in themselves have inspired and taught, given advice and listened.
Thank you all for inspiring me! Be assured that I will still be watching you (with the help of the old fashioned e-bookmark) for more wonderful work.
I'll still be around for a few days (deleting the rest of my work and journals) if anyone needs to contact me. For those of you who are part of my animation project, please e-mail me or send me a message through the First Light Studios forums.
Devious Comments
I highly recommend you read it.
I'll send you a note with my e-mail address once I finish deleting all my deviations.
k sounds good!
Thanks!
It was never more than a hobby piece for me, And as you know I dont make a living with my photos or poems,
And even though the odds of the admins using my stuff for profit without premission are statistically insignifigant, it is enough to make you think.
I'm really going to miss you
You really had a great and unique voice in the DA community,
and it sems your moral standards are much higher than mine.
I really am going to miss you.
It's not as if I didn't know that there was something shifty going on with the legal jargon. I had heard about this issue countless times before and was aware of it when I joined.
Nevertheless, it was only after I read the whole thing that the reality of this sunk in. Instead of championing the rights of artists, DA is trampling on them.
I don't plan to make my living as an artist either, but I know several art students and professional artists on this site who DO make their living from art. To me, the behaviour of the DA administration is despicable because they promote their website as as a community for artists to share and display their work in the name of artists for "art".
This facade dupes people, because DA was, is and will remain a corporation. I know that the majority of people will not have their art ripped off and used by DA but still, the legal jargon leaved one to wonder what separated DA from the average ripper who steals artwork without crediting or even compensating the artists?
The only difference is that the legal terms stipulated by DA stop any artists from seeking legal recourse! Thus, with a ripper you can at least fight the petty thief. With DA, even that is no longer possible because if you accepted the terms of use you are stuck.
(The very maximum DA will pay an artist if they incorporate their work into the promotion of the DA logo, website etc is $5 --and that is only IF forced by a judge.)
Sorry...I started ranting again. I am going to miss you immensely as well, Silver.
And just to let you know, if I were part of the DA buearcracy you would be one of the first photographers I would rip off.
Maybe I should also put down my work. I'll just put it up in a different gallery somewhere.
Thanks for the notice

Now doesn't that make you feel like you sold your soul to the devil?
Where are you considering putting your art up on? I heard that Sheezy art and other such sites have similar policies to DA, which is why I'm asking.
I've heard art blogs are good alternatives for those who aren't interested in creating their own websites.

And I completely agree with what you said: it is exactly like selling your soul to the devil!. Mind if I put that up as a deviation? It might get people's attention.
